About

Shaun Yeo

Yeo, a born and bred Southlander, began publishing cartoons while still at high school. In 1991, he began a four year collaboration with Angus Low on a weekly cartoon serial Phatman, which was published in The Southland Times. He subsequently worked full-time at the Times, mainly in advertising and marketing before becoming the Editorial Artist in 2010. Yeo joined Fairfax Editorial Services in 2011 supplying illustrations, cartoons and caricatures to the entire Fairfax NZ stable of newspapers and magazines. Also in 2011, he created A Splotch of Ink, a weekly pantomime cartoon which appeared every Saturday in The Southland Times and ran for four years. In 2013 he was appointed political cartoonist for the Sunday News. In 2016, he began supplying caricatures to the Dominion Post. He has also produced illustrations for children’s books as well as writing and illustrating his own book The King, the crown and the dragon, which was published in 2006.
In 2009 Yeo was named a finalist in the Best Artwork category at the Qantas Media Awards and again in 2018 at the Canon Media Awards.

He was a finalist in the Cartoonist of the Year category at the Voyager Media awards (formaly Qantas Media Awards) in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

In 2020 he became the daily political cartoonist for the Otago Daily Times.
